HELPING YOUR LITTLES FEEL COMFORTABLE DURING A PORTRAIT SESSION

One of the biggest concerns parents have before family photos is “What if my kids don’t cooperate?”

If you have ever wondered whether your child will smile, sit still, or make it through the experience without getting overwhelmed, you are not alone. This is one of the most common questions we hear from parents, and the truth is, it is completely normal.

The good news is that your children do not need to be perfect for your family portraits to be beautiful. Children are naturally curious, playful, and full of personality. They move, explore, laugh, and sometimes have their own ideas about how things should go. Those moments are often what make your images feel meaningful and true to your family.

At Jean Johnson Portraits, our goal is not to create a perfectly posed version of your family. We want to capture the connection, personalities, and little details that tell the story of this season of your life. Here are a few ways you can help your child feel comfortable and confident before your portrait experience.

1. Talk About the Session Beforehand

Your child’s experience begins before you arrive. Talk about your family photos in a positive, casual way. Let them know you are going to spend time together, have fun, and create something special as a family. Try not to put pressure on them by reminding them they need to smile or behave a certain way. When children feel like they have a job to do, they can sometimes become more hesitant. Instead, keep it simple: “We’re going to take pictures together, play, and have fun.” When the experience feels relaxed ahead of time, children are more likely to feel comfortable when they arrive.

2. Schedule Around Your Child’s Routine

Timing can make a big difference, especially with younger children. Whenever possible, plan your portrait experience around your child’s normal schedule. A child who has had a good nap and a full meal is more likely to feel happy, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the day.

It can also help to avoid scheduling photos on an already busy day. Giving yourself extra time to arrive and settle in allows everyone to start feeling calm and present.

3. Keep Expectations Realistic

It is easy to imagine the perfect family photo: everyone smiling, looking at the camera, and sitting perfectly still. While we will capture those moments when they happen, some of the images families treasure most are often the ones that feel the most natural. A genuine laugh. The way your child reaches for you. A quiet cuddle. A playful moment between siblings. These are the details that help you remember exactly what this season of life felt like. Your child does not need to smile the entire time. They simply need to be comfortable and connected with the people they love.

4. Let Kids Be Kids

Children experience the world through movement and curiosity, and those moments often create some of the most memorable images. Walking, playing, snuggling, laughing, and exploring all give us opportunities to capture your family naturally. If your child needs time to warm up, wants to be silly, or has extra energy, that is completely okay. We will guide your family throughout the experience while creating space for your child’s personality to shine through.

5. Bring Comfort Items (Strategically)

A favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or small snack can be helpful if your child needs a little extra reassurance.

Having something familiar nearby can help children feel comfortable in a new environment or take a moment to reset if needed. And if a favorite toy makes its way into a few images, that is okay. These details are part of your child’s story right now and help document this season of life.

6. Choose Comfortable Outfits

Beautiful outfits are part of creating portraits you will love, but comfort matters too. Choose clothing that feels good, fits well, and allows your child to move naturally. If they are uncomfortable or constantly adjusting their outfit, it can make it harder for them to relax. When children feel comfortable, their confidence and personality naturally come through.

7. Your Energy Sets the Tone

Children are incredibly aware of the emotions around them. If you are feeling stressed about getting the perfect photo, your child may pick up on that pressure. Instead, focus on enjoying this time together and trust us to guide the experience. Your role is simply to connect with your family. Our role is to capture those relationships and preserve these memories for you.

8. Trust Your Photographer

Every child is different. Some warm up immediately, while others need a little more time. Some love being in front of the camera, while others prefer to observe first. That is all part of the process. Working with children and families is something we love. We know how to adjust the pace, redirect when needed, and create opportunities for meaningful moments to unfold.

Your Family Story Is Worth Preserving

As parents, we are often so focused on what comes next that we forget to pause and appreciate where we are right now. A portrait experience gives you the chance to slow down, celebrate your family, and preserve these fleeting moments before they change.

These images become more than photographs. They become a way to return to this season of life and remember the people, personalities, and connections that made it special.
