MATERNITY F.A.Q.S | EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

You’re expecting a baby! Congratulations to you and your family! We know that everything changes when you know a baby is on the way. Between your growing belly and your growing family, there is a transformation in your home when you are preparing for a new little family member. These moments are special, emotional, they go so quickly, and they will soon be a distant memory.

Finding the right photographer is very important. We want to help capture your baby and these family milestones so that you and your family can remember this fleeting moment forever. We love designing a very personal and unique to each family session and creating heirloom products that will be treasured for years to come.

WHAT MONTH OF PREGNANCY DOES THE SESSION OCCUR?

We usually try to schedule your session when you’re about 7 ½ to 8 months along because we want your bump to be very visible in the portraits. That being said, if you have a history or your doctor thinks you may go into labor early, we would recommend closer to 7 months. Each pregnancy is unique and your session timing depends on how you’re feeling, the size of your bump, and what makes you and your partner most comfortable.

SHOULD MY SPOUSE COME?

Absolutely! While not every maternity session includes the spouse, we believe this is a journey that you both are on together. We love photographing couples for maternity sessions and can always do a mix of just the woman and the couple together as well. These portraits are designed to best fit your unique family needs.

WHAT DO I WEAR?

Wear what makes you feel beautiful and comfortable. Portrait sessions can be tiring and especially when you are late in your pregnancy! Try to coordinate clothing with your partner and choose colors that enhance your skin tone, hair, and eye color. Please avoid branding and clothing with words as well as tops that will show any straps. We recommend not wearing large patterns on your baby bump because we want to accentuate your bump as much as possible. Solid color or simple patterned dresses work very well. While it is possible to photograph two outfits in a 60-minute session, we recommend choosing only one outfit.

WHERE WILL THE SESSION BE?

That is entirely up to you! We can either offer studio portraits at our home studio in Sammamish or an on location photoshoot. All our session fees include travel within 30 miles of Sammamish, although we will travel further for a fee consistent with the distance or special costs of going there. We love helping couples find the perfect location for their vision of these portraits and always take the time to brainstorm with you.

WHAT IF IT RAINS?

This is a reality in the Pacific North West! If it’s a rainy day, we’ll reschedule. We always leave a little wiggle room in our calendar for postponements due to rain.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Bring a water bottle (although we always have some if you forget), any hair and makeup touch up (we provide a mirror), a jacket if it’s chilly, and some comfortable shoes just for walking around in. Some people like to include their dogs, so if you’d like to bring a pet, please bring their leash and some treats and be prepared to leave them in the car for part of the session.

WILL MY WEIGHT GAIN SHOW IN THE PHOTOS (ANKLES, FACE, ETC.)?

I know it sounds so silly that we want to photograph you when you’ve gained the most amount of weight, so this is a common concern. Don’t stress! We will pose you, so your bump is accentuated, but you still look flattering. If there are any minor editing adjustments needed later, we can definitely address them at the time. We fully retouch every image ordered and while we work hard to have the most natural images that look just like you, we recognize that sometimes a little neck tuck or slimming helps our confidence. :)

HOW SOON DO I NEED TO BOOK A DATE?

We can schedule your portrait session as soon as you know you’re pregnant to as late as a couple weeks before. Planning ahead is definitely best. We have a consultation with all our couples prior to booking in order to share all our pricing & collections, products, and process information with you and also so that we can help you brainstorm and plan a session that will be successful and give us the images you’ve dreamed of. June through October is our busiest time of year and we especially recommend planning ahead for those months as we do sometimes fully book.

WHAT IF I GO INTO LABOR EARLY?

This is why we usually plan to do the session 6-8 weeks before your due date. If for some reason you do go into labor extremely early, we can either reimburse you for the amount you’ve paid upfront or we can use the investment amount as credit toward either a newborn or family session once you and the baby are healthy. Your health and safety is most important to us!

WHEN SHOULD I PLAN FOR NEWBORN PORTRAITS?

Newborn portraits are best within the first two weeks of birth. The reason for this is because the baby typically sleeps the most in the first two weeks and this is the easiest time to capture that dreamy newborn pose. If you are planning to do newborn photos, the best thing to do is to let us know your due date and we will then be sure to leave some extra margin in our calendar for your portrait session.
