HOW TO PREPARE YOUR KIDS FOR A FAMILY PORTRAIT SESSION
Family portraits matter in a way that often feels bigger than the moment itself, but getting there with kids can feel a little unpredictable. Most parents worry about cooperation, expressions, or whether everything will “go as planned.” The good news is that a little thoughtful preparation can make a noticeable difference. When kids feel comfortable and know what to expect, the session becomes easier, more natural, and far more enjoyable for everyone.
1. Talk About the Session Ahead of Time
Kids feel more confident when they know what’s coming in simple, positive terms. Keeping the conversation light helps set expectations without pressure.
Explain it as a fun family activity, not a performance
Show a few example portraits so they know what to expect
Emphasize connection and fun over “perfect behavior”
2. Keep Outfits Comfortable and Coordinated
What kids wear can affect their comfort and mood more than parents realize. The goal is to look cohesive while still allowing everyone to move and feel at ease.
Choose soft, comfortable clothing over stiff or itchy fabrics
Coordinate colors rather than matching exactly
Select shoes they can walk and move in easily
Tell them how cool or pretty they look in their awesome, new outfit!
3. Plan Timing Strategically
Kids do best when they are rested, fed, and in a good mood. Choosing the right time of day can make a noticeable difference in their energy and cooperation.
Schedule after naps or meals when possible
Avoid tired or overstimulated times of day
Morning or late afternoon often works best
5. Bring Essentials to the Session
Having a few simple items on hand helps keep small issues from interrupting the flow of the session. It allows everyone to stay relaxed and focused.
Snacks and water
Baby wipes or tissues
Hairbrush or small grooming items
A backup outfit if young kids
6. Go With the Flow
Kids are naturally unpredictable, and that’s part of what makes the images real. Letting go of perfection allows us to capture more genuine moments.
Expect movement, silliness, and spontaneity
Let us guide with natural prompts
Avoid relying on screens or constant bribery
7. Celebrate the Experience
How you frame the experience before and after the session shapes how kids remember it. Keeping it positive helps them feel proud and connected to the final images.
Talk positively about the session before and after
Look through images together as a family
Focus on the memory, not perfection
A successful family portrait session doesn’t come from perfect behavior; it comes from thoughtful preparation and realistic expectations. When kids are comfortable, well-timed, and given space to be themselves, everything else falls into place more naturally.
In the end, your family portraits should reflect who you are together: connected, genuine, and full of life. A little preparation simply helps that story come through more clearly.
