FAMILY PORTRAITS FAQS: WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR FAMILY PHOTO SESSION

Planning a family portrait session often comes with questions, and that’s completely normal. Whether this is your first time booking professional family photos or a yearly tradition, knowing what to expect helps everyone feel relaxed and prepared.

Below are answers to the most common questions about family photography sessions, from timing and outfits to kids’ behavior and finished artwork.

How long does a family photo session last?

Our family portrait sessions include up to two hours of photographic time, though many families don’t need the full amount.

Families with one child, younger kids, or those wanting a simpler experience typically photograph for about 1–1.5 hours. Multigenerational families or those planning albums will usually want to plan on using the full two hours.

Do family outfits need to match?

No, matching outfits are no longer the trend in modern family photography.

Instead, we recommend coordinating outfits using complementary colors, textures, and styles. Coordination creates a timeless look while allowing each family member to wear something they enjoy. We’re always happy to help with outfit planning and styling guidance.

What if my kids don’t cooperate during family photos?

Honestly, they might not and that’s okay!

Children bring personality and unpredictability to every family photo session, and we expect that. The best approach is to stay relaxed and go with the flow while we use playful prompts and movement to keep things fun and natural. Some of the most loved images come from the in-between moments.

Do you retouch scratches, bruises, or blemishes?

Yes. During post-production, we automatically remove anything non-permanent, such as scratches, bruises, or blemishes.

How many photos will we receive?

You’ll select your images during your ordering session after viewing your gallery. Most families choose 20–45 images, depending on how they plan to display or share their portraits.

Do you help with albums or wall art?

Absolutely. We guide every client in selecting heirloom-quality prints, albums, and wall art designed specifically for their home, helping your photos live beyond a screen for years to come.

When is the best time of year for family photos?

Every season offers something unique for family portraits. The best time depends on your schedule and style preferences. We can help you make this decision during your Design Consultation.

Do you pose families or keep photos candid?

Both! We combine gently guided posing with candid interaction during every family photography session, creating images that feel traditional while still capturing genuine moments.

Family portraits are about more than smiling at the camera. They preserve connection, personality, and this season of life.

If you’re thinking about booking a family photo session and still have questions, we’re here to guide you every step of the way so the experience feels easy, relaxed, and enjoyable for everyone.
